The NCSO® Program
Enrollment
Applicants must have at least three (3) years or 6,000 hours of construction field experience within the past ten (10) years, of which a minimum of two (2) years must be in Canada. Construction field experience is defined as:
A construction worker (labourer or skilled construction tradesperson) working directly and actively in the construction field (i.e. residential, commercial, industrial, road building, pipeline construction, mobile equipment operations, etc., or similar title); or, an individual who is directly and actively engaged in safety (i.e. Site Safety Coordinator, or similar title) or responsible for the supervision (i.e.: Site Superintendent) of the construction worker, who also works directly and actively in the construction field on a full-time basis.
If you do not meet the “Construction Field Experience” requirements, you can apply for the NHSA™ designation and then move to the NCSO® certification once the “Construction Field Experience” can be later verified.

Designation Requirements
Upon acceptance into the program, NCSO® candidates are required to complete the following:
Maintenance Requirements
The NCSO® designation must be verified every three years. To maintain NCSO® status, applicants must complete the NCSO® Renewal Application and pay $50 +HST renewal fee, maintain current training certificates, as applicable, and submit documentation to demonstrate the continued practical application of their skills and abilities.
Equivalency Requirements
The NLCSA will recognize an individual who has attained a NCSO® designation from another member of the Canadian Confederation of Construction Safety Associations, signatory to the 2017 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO)® Program.
To receive the NCSO® designation from the NLCSA, individuals who qualify to apply under equivalency will be required to submit a copy of their NCSO® designation, a completed copy of the NCSO® application form, payment of the Application/Examination fee of $50.00 + HST, and successfully challenge the NLCSA’s provincial knowledge examination.
Please note that the NLCSA will only accept NCSO® designations following the criteria of the 2017 MOU agreement.
