On March 3rd over 220 delegates connected at NLCSA’s Health and Safety Conference at The Sheraton in St. John’s.

The theme for this year’s event, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On Safely’, reflected the importance of both physical and emotional wellbeing. “When it comes down to it, internal motivators that drive behavior are just as much a part of safety as are the external factors, such as policies, personal protective equipment, and engineered controls,” said NLCSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Jackie Manuel. “This year’s theme serves as a motto of encouragement and due diligence for everyone.”

Several of the day’s presentations were in keeping with the conference theme:

Regina McMichael, President of The Learning Factory Inc. addressed safety and risk management and challenged each delegate to become a ‘Safety Ninja’.

Harvey Rice, from Springdale Forest Resources Inc. shared the challenges and rewards experienced by this company – from a health and safety perspective – in relation to its work on the Muskrat Falls project.

Corina Walsh, a Certified Professional Coach, and one of Atlantic Canada’s Top 50 Leaders Under- 40, discussed how emotional intelligence impacts an individual’s behavior and how harnessing one’s own emotions can lead to greater safety and success.

And the day ended with a unique and interactive game show, SAFEty or Sorry.
